Alien vs Predator:
John Fasano's Predalien sketch

leading from

John Fasano was involved in working on the story for the first AVP movie and everyone agreed that there should be a Pred-Alien in the film and so he doodled a concept for the creature that was a combination of an Alien and a Predator on a placemat.

  1. icollector: PREDATOR-ALIEN HYBRID. John doodled this concept for a combined alien/predator creature while he was working on the first ALIEN v PREDATOR film. Pen and ink on paper placemat, 10" x 15". (http://www.icollector.com/JOHN-FASANO-Original-Pred-Alien-Placemat-Drawing_i20635374 (2014))

Exorcist: The Beginning / Dominion

leading from

a) Two Prequels of the Exorcist
As a prequel to The Exorcist, Paul Schrader made the movie Dominion and the studio bosses were not happy with it so they fired him before his film could be finished and Renny Harlin was brought in to make his own version of a prequel called Exorcist: The Beginning, which was a very curious thing to happen in cinema history, and maybe a first, and then it might make one wonder how many other times this had been done, but to add to the oddity of this event, Paul Schrader was eventually allowed to release a near enough finished version of his film. Renny Harlin's movie was released in the cinema in 2005 and Paul Schrader's movie was shown in a limited release the following year, namely at film festivals and then released on DVD by the end of the year. To watch them both, after a while one may become confused about which film is which since they both share the lead actor Stellen Skarsgård as well as a few others cast members and take place in the same environment with the same sets.

b) Drawing Parallels with the Alien mysteries
When the films were both released on DVD, I immediately watched them and noticed that both films featured interesting imagery in the form of a 1500 year old Byzantine church built in the middle of nowhere built to cover over a place of sacrficial worship around a large idol. In Renny's Exorcist: The Beginning it was a definite representation of Pazuzu as seen in The Exoricist, but in Schrader's Dominion a slightly more abstract devil figure and the place of worship complete with sacrificial blood drains. So this reminded me of the relationship between the odd derelict and the silo beneath from Alien, the silo was originally suppose to be a birth temple with sacrificial plinth complete with blood drains. Also in Renny Harlin's movie, in their original exploration they enter through a hole in the roof  and then lower themselves down with a rope since at the time the front entrance has been buried and it is only much later that they discover the cave beneath which contains the temple with the idol. It naturally seemed to have something in common with the the exploration of the alien pyramid discovered on the planetoid in the original Alien script by Dan O'Bannon.

Once we got to the point where Prometheus is released, we find a story about archeologists and a strange temple with strange murals, curious idols such as one almost in a crucified pose with perhaps the vague impressions of four wings trailing behind, the building is built in a desolate landscape that also leads into strange caves and tunnels and also houses something rather old and dangerous that transformed people into something rather hostile.

While the original Alien movie was made in the aftermath of the Exorcist and perhaps the Alien creature slight echoes the form of Pazuzu, Prometheus may well be redress the set of where the Exorcist prequels had gone before.

c) Niche within the idol
In Renny Harlin's version, this idol also featured a small niche abstractly cut away into its chest for holding the head of a smaller version of this idol. The place was built perhaps to purify the sight and imprison the evil spirit. In a sketch for the huge idol in the form of the head of an engineer in Prometheus, Ridley had a thought about having a niche within the cheek in which an ampule would be placed. Of course it doesn't take a giant leap of the imagination to want to explore the concept but still it's a peculiar parallel to see

d) Children of Quatermass And The Pit
Another thing that stood out from the movie was it's similarities to Quatermass And The Pit with its unearthing of a buried sight housing an ancient devil and its release drives the people around in a warring murderous state.  Although one is on Earth and the other on another planet somewhere across the stars, and they both take inspiration in different ways from Nigel Kneale's Quatermass And The Pit made into a brilliant TV series and a film.  Ridley had spoken about his interests in Quatermass And The Pit in the Prometheus director's commentary.

Propstore: This is a special effects Alien Warrior hero head mask from the 2004 sci-fi mashup Alien vs. Predator. This piece would have been worn by a performer in a full Alien suit to get the full range of motion, with puppeteers controlling the actual facial movements. This head was used in the film when a Predator shoots a net on an unsuspecting lunging Alien; the net is then shown digging into the Warrior’s head as it tries to free itself. Propstore: The head mask is made of foam latex at the neck with plastic making up the elongated head. The very top section of the head is made of silicone, creating the effect of the net “digging in” to the Alien’s head as it struggles to escape. The bottom of the piece features a front zipper, making the piece easy to connect/disconnect to the Alien suit. Additionally, there are two small eyeholes in the front of the neck made of black mesh for the mask wearer to see out of. This head mask still has numerous cables attached from the production, running from the head to five puppeteer control levers mounted on a wooden base. Once the cables are outstretched, the levers, when manipulated, control the Alien’s upper lip as well as the inner and outer lower lip. (Source: http://www.propstore.com/)

Both the head mask as well as the control base feature some wear due to production use and storage; additionally, two of the five levers no longer function. Both the control base and head mask remain in overall good condition. (http://www.propstore.com/)

Alien Vs Predator: Special Effects Facehugger

leading from

The Facehugger was created by the artists at Amalgamated Dynamics Incorporated for the scenes in AVP: Alien Vs. Predator in which they latched onto the faces of their sedated human hosts. The latex body has metal armatures running through the legs, capped with plastic claws. The Facehugger is presented on a custom-made head display, and has special built in air sacs to allow an off-screen operator to create a breathing effect. (source: http://www.propstore.com/)

1.  Propstore: This is an Alien Warrior insert attack head created for the production of the 2004 sci-fi film Alien vs. Predator. The head was created for use in the film of close-up “attack” shots where an Alien Warrior extends its deadly silver tongue to kill its’ prey. The head is made of fiberglass, plastic, and foam and is the instantly recognizable elongated head design from the iconic film series.

2. Propstore: The outside shell of the black head is crafted from fiberglass with an opening at the rear of the static, open mouth as well as the front bottom of the rear section; there is also mounting hardware still present attached underneath the head along with writing from the production: “Head D”. Also, the back of the plastic dome covering was intentionally left off; this was all done to allow filmmakers to create the effect of the tongue shooting out of the mouth, as the piece would only have been shot from the front. The mouth also has silver pointed teeth and a foam latex covering which extends to the top of the head’s front. (Source: http://www.propstore.com/)

3. Propstore: The dome of the head is made of a smoky, clear plastic which allows the top of the head’s unique skeletal structure to be seen underneath. Additionally, the head still features two thin, plastic tubes running into the sides of the mouth and around the front which were used to pump liquid for the Alien’s drooling effect and painted black to blend in with the face. 4. Propstore: The head measures approximately 11” x 6” x 34” (28cm x 15cm x 86cm) and has some wear due to heavy production use and storage: the plastic dome has become cracked in two places, as well as some foam cracking around the mouth. Though used in the production, this particular head can not be screen matched. Overall this Warrior head remains in fair condition.
