The Temptation of St Anthony trail

leading from

1450) Dieric Bouts' "Hell"
Bouts painted Hell and I assume that something yet to be identified was referenced as a composition structure to base it on in the way that he appeared to use in a customary way the Henu Barque for his Resurrection painting later in 1455

1645) Salvator Rosa's Temptation of St Anthony

References?
  • Dieric Bouts' Hell. The spiked wheel in the background becomes the neck of this curious demon, with the naked body beneath it becoming the head, but the flames coming from the cave becomes the lighting on the head. Other comparisons can be made.

1930? to 1933) Salvador Dali's Portrait of Emilio Terry

Asking how it might have been something that inspired Sergei Eisenstein and H P Lovecraft with their drawings in 1931 leads to a brick wall since Dali was known to have started his Portrait of Emilio Terry in 1932, but it was also said to have been painted in 1930 by other sources.

It might have to be labeled as a coincidence.
