Salvador Dali: Persistence of Memory

Persistence of Memory (1931)

a) Reinterprets shapes and forms from the Sokar Funerary Barque image from the Papyrus of Ani?

b) The tree references the barque with the antelope head and horns.

c) The U shaped prongs that are ox horns placed at the back against the fan behind the antelope skull becomes a watch.

d) The warped face on the ground references the kilt of the man crouched on the ground. Compare the eyelashes to the stripe patterns. The face could also be compared to confusion about the soft white pillow like shapes held in the structure of the boat that I might wonder is a pile of sand. The eyelashes could also be loosely compared to the stripes on the fan behind the antelope's head, and the U shaped prongs booms a watch again here.

e) The block supporting the tree and the watches is the stand that supports the sokar funerary barque.

f) The rod going across becomes a minute hand of the watch draped across the block.

g) The rudders and perhaps the straps connecting the boat to the runners of the sled becomes the back of a near-red watch covered in ants.
