She grew up in Southern California, and so had some awareness of the Chicano subculture. 
 
Without a dialect coach of time or money to fly back to Los Angeles, she had to do it from memory. 
 
She had her parents send her some source material from libraries in Los Angeles - interviews with gang members, that sort of thing, because all there was in London were travel books to Mexico.
