There would be the understanding here that Syd Mead's drawing appears to reference HR Giger's painting ZDF done in 1980.

So with that understanding Jim Cameron's creative mind might started working out how it related to ZDF and then tried to tie some of those relationships in with what he was getting from Giger's painting for his Alien Queen.
