a) Friends with painter Hugo Schuhmacher
HR Giger was friends with the artist Hugo Schuhmacher from Zürich, who did plenty of paintings of domestic consumer culture such as his Frauto (Woman with Car) series in a hyperrealistic style, and Hugo started to use airbrush painting.

b) Introduction to the airbrush
Soon he came to Giger with an airbrush gun and explained the technique to him. Hugo was having a hard time getting the hang of the airbrush, and had practised with it for five years, whereas Giger figured it out right away and it took him perhaps two or three days to master the technique before becoming and airbrusher.

In the fall of 1971 he bought his first spray gun, an «Efbe» model, 0.015 mm, with carbonic acid gas in bottles and later operated by a compressor. First, he needed the spray gun in addition to brush painting for the series of passages, and so we would come to see the start of his significant airbrush paintings from 1972 onwards.

  1. Patrick Frey:  Were you sort of waiting for a technique like airbrushing to come along? The Swiss Pop artist Hugo Schuhmacher from Zürich, who did plenty of paintings of domestic consumer culture – his Woman with Car, for example, in a hyperrealistic style – started out with airbrush painting.
HR Giger  He was fantastic! He came to me with an airbrush gun and explained the technique to me. He was having a hard time getting the hang of it. He said he’d been practicing on it for five years, whereas I figured out how airbrushing works right away. It took me two or three days to master the technique, and then I airbrushed. That was the end of the friendship! (Laughs) (http://kaleidoscope.media/hr-giger/)
