He sports a weaponised mechanical left arm that’s attached to the base of his brain so that there is constant communication with it, and he could do anything he wanted with is as an arm. 

It also had special hidden functions making it useful as a tool kit.

Effects partnered with the production from pre‑production through final delivery to build the MorrowArm — a hero asset that anchors the series’ visual language. 


Rothbart took great pride in this particular digital effect.


In total, the team had to render the limb in more than 300+ shots for 70 distinct lighting scenarios which became particularly tricky for the Morrow-heavy fifth episode aboard the “Maginot.” and so it was developed by a team of nearly 100 artists across design, modeling, rigging, lookdev, lighting, and comp.

a.iii) Light changes on Morrow walking through the ship


Rothbart acknowledged how Morrow was walking through the ship and the lighting is constantly changing, and how for a CG artist, that’s a nightmare, especially when there is this prosthetic that is this translucent synthetic with mechanical interior.

a.iv) Early design work

Early design work covered mechanical, skeletal, and body‑horror directions, always anchored to the franchise’s design DNA.

Initial explore to heavily by mechanical direction taking cues from HR Giger and Zdzilslaw Beksinski.
The material stack was central — a silicone‑like sleeve over hybrid mechanical/organic components suspended in gel, with Giger‑inspired translucency and visible internal workings to blend organic and mechanical cues.

The early versions featured woven muscle and bone like textures that felt more grown and manufactured. 

There were versions where Morrow’s blade was a segmented bone like structure that extended from a bloody gash in the bottom of the palm.

It was a visual approach that leaned heavily into the body horror root of the franchise also explored the direction that was virtually robotic and mechanical moving towards an aesthetic that felt like it had come straight off a Weyland-Yutani production line.

This iteration was defined by tactical materialistic language, utilising precision-milled blades and articulated joints to sell idea of a mass-produced military hardware. 

It was a shift away from ‘bespoke’ feel of the organic versions into something much more functional and industrial.

They would stick with the idea was that it had to resemble the HR Giger’s look seen in Alien. N.B. This might have seemed to be curious decision since everything Giger designed Alien was supposed to resemble Alien technology. Should there a mysterious question worth asking about its origin    ?)

"It had to sit in the H.R. Giger look of Alien. The idea was that it had a synthetic wrapper, and FIN figured out that look, revealing technology inside, and reanimated the hand. a.v) It can’t be Terminator!

The production created a flexible sleeve to represent Morrow’s robotic appendage. 

They wanted to avoid it resembling the mechanics of Jim Cameron’s movie Terminator. 

As they were designing the look of the arm in post-production, what was really important to Rothbart was that whatever design they did didn’t take away from the character itself,

And he kept on thinking to himself, ‘It can’t be Terminator, it can’t be Terminator, it can’t be Terminator.’

  1. The biggest moment, shown in Episode 1 in a cold open to the entire series as well, is when Morrow unleashes his cyborg arm, turning his hand into a welder, to seal himself in — dooming one of his crewmembers to certain death at the xenomorph’s fangs.
    As we were designing the look of the arm in [post-production], what was really important to me was that whatever design we did didn’t take away from the character itself,” Rothbart said. “And I kept on thinking to myself, ‘It can’t be Terminator, it can’t be Terminator, it can’t be Terminator.’ So really trying to fight that urge to show off this metallic arm and make it some centerpiece of who he is, and instead have it more in the background and just woven into the tapestry of his character.

a.vi) Woven into the tapestry of his character

They were trying to create a Look at no one had really seen before but also they were trying to keep it so it wasn’t able to top so that Morrow could just live in a scenes and you were not really focused on the arm indeed there would only be three times that the camera focuses on what the arm specifically is doing and the rest of the time it’s just part of the scene. 

So that meant really trying to fight that urge to show off this metallic arm and make it some centerpiece of who he is, and instead have it more in the background and just woven into the tapestry of his character.

  1. Interestingly” says Rothbart” we were trying to create a look that you hadn’t really seen before, but also we were trying to keep it so it wasn’t over the top, that is, that Morrow could just live in a scenes and you would not really focus on the arm. Indeed, there’s only three times we actually focus on what the arm is specifically doing and the rest of the time it’s just part of the scene (Befores and Afters #56)

a.vii) Echoes of Furiosa’s, prosthetiv arm

Rothbart thought of something like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ where Furiosa has a prosthetic arm the whole time, and what was important was that the viewer got so into the character that they never really focused on the arm at all. 

It was really Rothbart’s goal that nobody sat there and ever said, ‘Oh, the CG arm is cool.'

He added, “I thought of something like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ where she has a [prosthetic] arm the whole time, and what was important was that you got so into the character that you never really focused on the arm at all. a.viii) The arm as only an extension of Morrow?

Making the arm an extension of Morrow as a character, rather than “an effect,” speaks to the grounded approach of “Alien: Earth” overall. 

To increase the naturalism of Morrow having a cybernetic arm, Painter had Babou Ceesay wear an actual prosthetic arm over his own arm to simulate the way Morrow would move with it.

The designing, building, and fitting the arm just so to Babou Ceesay, would appear to take weeks and weeks and weeks of work.

Painter noted how the team tried to avoid the ‘green-sock element’ and have a visual aid for Babou, for Noah Hawley, for Dana Gonzales and for everyone on set, referring to having the cyborg arm on Morrow as a practical effect that would then be enhanced with VFX. 

That was Painter’s biggest challenge: producing a three-dimensional version of the concept to help everybody on set.

Ultimately , they transitioned into a synthetic anatomy phase which became their final look this involved layering semi translucent silicon shells partly human partly robotic internals.

a.xi) Keeping the internal slightly mysterious

This direction provided some great opportunity to showcase depths within the arm by playing with the scattering of light as its move through the different layers of material and it struck a great balance of showing off the internals when required.

Also kept them slightly mysterious is allowed them to retain the mechanical position of the previous phase while they were introducing the visceral unsettling quality essential in the Alien universe.

Photorealism depended on how light moved through those layers. 

They balanced opacity, transparency, absorption, and refraction to hold the look across 30+ lighting environments. 

They built a robust shader “recipe” that worked out of the box, with controls for hero refinements.

a.xiii) full‑body digital double with arm variants


Each shot started with roto‑animation of the actor from the plate. 


They built a full‑body digital double with arm variants to match on‑set prosthetics. 


Precise match‑move was critical, and they selectively enhanced the performance: the prosthetic sleeve gave solid track and lighting reference but limited micro‑gestures, so their animators restored subtle hand and finger movement in CG.


FIN VFX’s first step in integrating its CG arm was, of course, body tracking, and matchmoving to the real arm and prosthetic. 


Tracking was the foundation of all the other departments’s work, and it was essential to achieve a solid track and tight roto-anime for Morrow in every shot.

a.xiv) Full body model


(N.B. in this section, I don’t know if they’re talking about a physical model or is this just the digital model?But this follows a statement coming from Befores & Afters))

To support this, they created a full-body model based on scans of the actor, supported by a comprehensive rig. 


The model featured two distinct arm variants; one for shots where the actor wore a physical prosthetic sleeve, which thickened his hand and forearm substantially, and another for when he wore a thin green sleeve or was bare armed. 


Within the rig, they built in specific volume controls to account for fluctuations in the thickness of the onset prosthetic. 


Because the physical prop gathered moisture and gained volume throughout the shoot days, they needed flexibility to maintain a perfect fit.

a.xvi) No hiding the arm

When the prosthetic was finished, Gonzales noticed how they didn’t have to hide from it from then on. 

They didn’t have to say to Babou, once he put it on, ‘Hey, Babou, make sure we don’t see… Don’t use that hand,’  or whatever else. 

Because that’s what they did sometimes when they didn’t want to see the green sleeve, or they’re trying to save money or whatever else.

For six months, Babou observed how they were stuffing KY jelly into this sleeve. He himself had to lubricate his arm every day and shove his arm into the sleeve, while the temperature in Thailand was 30 degrees centigrade although with fine air conditioning. This resulted in him taking a copy of the sleeve home with him to keep.

    Babou: It's a very expensive arm, actually, the one they made. So it looks almost like the one
    TImothy Oliphant: Where's that arm now? 
    Samuel: We know where it is. 
    Babou:  It might have walked off set. Um
    TImothy: It's a very expensive arm. Did you hear that? 
    Babou: I mean... 
    TImothy: You think Disney's just
    Babou: ... Six months
    TImothy: printing money over there? 
    Babou: Six months. 
    Babou: They’re stuffing KY jelly into this thing. I’m had to squ…It's so tight. 
    TImothy: they owed it you 
    Babou:  i made them give me this thing. They owed this to me.
    timothy: You saying they owed it to you
    samuel: You had to lube up every
    Babou:I had to lube up every…, i had to shove this thing in. I'm sweating. 30 degrees in Thailand, they had fine air conditioning in the studio. But look, yeah. So, I think... Timothy:There is a season two, someone's got to go out to Babu's house and get the arm.

Pipeline choices kept shots moving. 


Automated sims prevented internal intersections and added velocity‑based secondary motion within the gel.
