Sigourney Weaver and Ridley Scott vs Alien vs Predator

leading from

a) Sigourney's 1997 objections
1997, Sigourney talked about how she didn't want to return to the role of Ripley again, she thought that the character waking up in these endless nightmare situations was going to make the character a figure of fun, and also she knew that they were making Alien Vs Predator which to her sounded awful.

It was like putting it through a gristmill to make money, and it became one of the reasons that she didn't want to return, until she could be wooed into making Alien: Resurrection.

b) Sigourney's 2004 objections
2004, despite having made four Alien movies, she could only recall that she made three good movies in the Alien franchise and the news that an AvP movie would be made depressed her. Sigourney Weaver didn't rush out to see Alien Vs Predator because it looked awful to her and like a video game.

However, her loathing for the idea had nothing to do with someone else stepping into what seemed to be her shoes.

She had seen Saana Lathan, the star of Alien Vs Predator, in "Raisin In The Sun" and thought she was wonderful.

She hoped that the Aliens had won the battle in the film because the Predator was such a stupid looking creature to her, despite the fact that Stan Winston the creator of the alien creatures from Alien had created the creature with suggestions from Aliens director Jim Cameron.

The revelation came to her that the alien had lost.

However Ridley seemed not to be happy with the idea of the Alien Vs Predator thing anyway for the obvious reason.

In terms of business, he would only wish it the best of success for the purpose of business because that would show that the audience were interested and would pave the way to making another Alien movie.

c) Sigourney begins revising cinema history in 2015
2015, Sigourney claimed the very strange claim that when Ridley Scott was having thoughts about directing a third Alien movie.

He dropped out because it was announced that they wanted to make an Alien Vs Predator,  despite the fact that the production was initiated well after a year since Alien 3 actually went into production. (See AvP: Peter Briggs vs Paul Anderson)

d) The blurring of the Ripley Death Urge
Sigourney would also oddly blame the fact that she wanted to kill off the Ripley character in Alien 3 because the heard that Fox were going to do Alien Vs Predator because she was proud of the Alien movies, and be wrong for exactly the same reasons as she was about Ridley not directing Alien 3 because of AVP.

But as far as Jim Cameron remembered, she wanted Ripley to die in Aliens and the fact she died in Alien 3 just showed that she got what she wanted all along.

Peter Briggs was rolling his eyes over her claim.

  1. Sigourney Weaver: I just didn't get the point of, after three good movies, making a kind of video-game movie. And I still don't, except that, obviously, Fox stands to profit mightily from it. And I hope they do.  (http://articles.philly.com/2004-08-13/entertainment/25391516_1_alien-and-predator-acidic-blood-sci-fi-franchises), ( Daily News (Los Angeles, CA), Aug 13, 2004)
  2. Sigourney Weaver:We're both so busy that I'm not going to sit down and write the whole script. And I didn't rush to see Alien vs. Predator which looked awful to me, like a video game. But I just hope that the alien won, because predator is such a stupid looking creature. (Latino-Review.com via http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/2956/weaver-getting-too-old-for-alien-5/ )
  3. When told that in fact the aliens lost, Weaver got dramatic. "I'm offended. I need to take a shower." Still, she had one nice thing to say, "The actress who played the Ripley character, I saw in 'Raisin in the Sun'. She's wonderful. Sanaa Lathan. (Latino-Review.com via http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/2956/weaver-getting-too-old-for-alien-5/)
  4. Sigourney Weaver: Well, yes – because I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien vs Predator. Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.
  5. Sigourney Weaver: In fact Ridley Scott was about to direct a third one, until this was announced, and he dropped out, because he also wanted to do an Alien sequel.(http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-07-19/sigourney-weaver-alien-vs-predator-really-depressed-me)
  6. When asked at London Film and Comic Con today if it was her choice to have her character Ripley killed off in Alien 3, the actress replied: “Well, yes – because I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien vs Predator. Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.(http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-07-19/sigourney-weaver-alien-vs-predator-really-depressed-me)
  7. While Weaver had liked the Aliens script, she had a few ideas. A few very specific ideas. "She tried to have an influence on Aliens, but it didn't work!' laughs Cameron. "She said "I don't want to shoot a gun." I said "No, you have to shoot a gun." 'Oh. Well, can I get killed?' 'No?' This familiar with the next film in the Alien series will no doubt notice that by 1991, Weaver's suggestions had been turned into demands. "When I saw the third film I cracked up, " Cameron chuckles, " because it was all the things she asked for in the second film. (Hotdog magazine (which issue is yet to be worked out))
  8. Peter Briggs: Maybe they were in a panic about “Alien 3”…I have no idea. And so when I hear Sigourney Weaver recounting her killing off Ripley in “Alien 3” because she’d heard Fox were talking about doing “Alien vs Predator”, despite the fact our project was first spoken about and initiated well over a year (not even counting Vincent Ward’s involvement!) after her movie had gone into active production, I really have to roll my eyes at her claims.
I love “Alien 3”. Well; I didn’t on its theatrical release, but I find the recent extended DVD recut even more watchable than “Aliens”. I’ll also be honest that I’m less-than-wild about the two “Alien vs Predator” movies (particularly “Requiem”, about which less said the better) But I do wish Sigourney Weaver would stop beating on “Alien vs Predator” as her pet piƱata in “ruining” the “Alien” franchise, and acknowledge that two standalone “Alien” movies she was actively involved with unfortunately managed that first, all on their own.
I don’t even know if Sigourney Weaver has read the “Alien vs Predator” draft I wrote. She’s never said she has. But, I was a fan obsessive of the “Alien” franchise, Sigourney. Big time. Particularly Ridley’s original, which is still unmatched. And “Alien vs Predator” — as a concept — is still killer, full of potential. Even its critically maligned first cinematic outing made $172,544,654 worldwide, compared to $159,814,498 for “Alien 3” and $161,376,068 for “Resurrection”. Hardly a financial “fail” there, Sigourney.
There’s a terrific “Alien vs Predator” movie still to be made by someone. It just hasn’t happened yet.

  9. Sigourney Weaver: I remember sort of sitting in in one of the execs offices and , and they said they were writing the script,  I was stunned frankly because one of the reasons I died was really to liberate the series, um,  from Ripley, because I didn't want her to keep waking up, you know "Oh my god, there's a monster on board," you know, I didn't want her to become like this, figure of fun, you know, that no one ever listened to, you know, and kept waking up in these terrible places. One situation worst than the next, so, for the sake of the series, and also because I heard they were going to do Alien vs Predator or something, which I thought sounded awful, I wanted out, they told me they were writing a new draft and I'd be very, um, I would find it very provocative how I was brought back. (The Making of Alien Resurrection: From The Ashes )
  10. Famitsu Wave spoke with Director Ridley Scott recently and answered several questions about those old rumours that he's keen on doing another "Alien" movie. Mediasharx managed to transcribe the key quotes:
Famitsu Wave:What of the rumor of another Alien movie?
Scott: We have been talking about doing another one for years. It's been a complex situation. At the end of the day, a studio has to be pleased, a core audience has to be pleased, and a director has to agree to all that. I am glad to say things are progressing...
Famitsu Wave: With you as Director?
Scott: I don't think I'll be directing, but I will have some involvement. It'll probably be based on an idea I have, so I hope I'm asked to be involved.
Famitsu Wave: Can you talk about the idea?
Scott: In broad terms, It's something for those folks that want to see Ridley's Journey come full circle and..
Famitsu Wave:Does that take her to the home planet of the Aliens?
Scott: She won't necessarily see the home planet, but you might...
Famitsu Wave:Do you know when this will happen?
Scott: Fox are waiting to see how Aliens vs Predator does, and then they'll do the Alien movie, and I believe a Predator film too. Again, if I'm involved in it, great, if not, then that's luck of the draw. (http://www.darkhorizons.com, Tuesday March 23rd 2004 12:15AM)
  11. Sigourney Weaver (November '97): I thought "Why are they doing Alien vs Predator?" We did some amazing films, and now they're just going to put it through the gristmill to make money. (Empire November 2004, p109)
