Alien Covenant: Odd Studios and Creatures Inc: Meeting and merging

leading from

a) Adam Johansen impacted by Alien
Adam Johansen of Odd Studios found Alien to be one of those films that had more than an impact on him, realising how Giger and Ridley created a world together using Giger's artwork for the creature,

b) Coming of Alien Covenant
When Alien Covenant was coming towards production, Adam and Conor O'Sullivan of Creatures Inc were already admirers of each others work.

Adam admired Conor O'Sullivan's work on projects such as Heath Ledger's makeup on the Dark Knight and he thought that "Engineer" that Creatures Inc did for Prometheus were beautifully done.

c) Meeting in Sydney
In September of 2015, they started corresponding via email.

Conor, once he knew that he was heading to Sydney, Australia contacted Adam along with Colin Ware in October of 2015, and was keen to chat about a possible collaboration with Odd Studio on Alien Covenant.

They met and chatted, quickly realising that they could work well together.

They had a lot of mutual friends and colleagues in bother Australia and the UK, so partnership seemed to make sense.

d) The Honour of working with Ridley
Of course the idea of following the Alien legacy and being honoured with working with Ridley Scott on an Alien film would indeed a huge responsibility.

That responsibility, combined with the sheer scale of the project and the pace of which it ran, would be a challenge.

e) Merger
In essence, they found themselves merging their company creating a collective called Odd Creatures, the combined team would have a crew of 45 handling all the practical creature effects, animatronics, prosthetics, dummies and puppets.

f) November 2015, initial work begins
By November 2015, Adam had officially started and by mid-November, Johansen's business partner Damien Martin joined him along with Colin Ware and Emily James, working on some initial sculptures and finishing tests.
  1. Adam Johansen : Conor [O’Sullivan, owner of Creatures Inc. and creature design supervisor on Covenant] and I were admirers of each other’s work and in September of 2015 we started corresponding via email. He was heading to Sydney and was keen to chat about a possible collaboration with Odd Studio on Alien: Covenant. We met and chatted and it quickly became apparent we could work well together. We also have a lot of mutual friends and colleagues both here and in the UK and a partnership seemed to make sense. (http://www.avpgalaxy.net/website/interviews/adam-johansen/ )
  2. Adam Johansen : I had also admired Conor’s work on projects such as Dark Knight (Heath’s joker make up) and I thought the ‘Engineers’ Creatures Inc did for Prometheus were beautifully done. Conor contacted myself and Colin Ware October 2015 as he was heading to Australia and was keen to chat about a possible collaboration with Odd Studio on Alien: Covenant. 3. Adam Johansen Yes, November 2015 was when I officially started and by mid November my Odd Studio business partner Damian Martin joined me along with Colin Ware and Emily James, working on some initial sculptures and finishing tests. Actually, I had a day last week going through Fox storage for some pick ups. So maybe I’ve only just finished working on Covenant as of the start of March 2017!(https://www.alien-covenant.com/news/exclusive-interview-with-alien-covenant-practical-effects-company-odd-studio--creatures-inc)
  4. Adam Johansen : We essentially merged the 2 companies for Alien: Covenant, naming the collective ODD CREATURES. The combined team of up to 45 crew, handled all the practical creature effects, animatronics, prosthetics, dummies and puppets.(http://www.avpgalaxy.net/website/interviews/adam-johansen/ )
  5. Adam Johansen : Alien, was one of those films that to say had a huge impact on me would be a monumental understatement. The world that Giger and Ridley created together, using Giger’s artwork for the creature, instantly became a cinematic classic.
Following that legacy and being honoured with working with Ridley Scott on an Alien film was indeed a huge responsibility. That responsibility, combined with the sheer scale of the
project and the pace of which it ran, was one of the most challenging jobs I’ve been involved with.
