Alien Resurrection: Ripley - Call: a lesbian relationship?

a) Trying to avoid scenes of Lesbianism
When Jeunet filmed the scene , he knew that Sigourney did not want to seem like a Lesbian in this movie.

She had enough of that with Alien 3 because of the fact that she shaved her head for the role.

There was even an incident with the costume design where she thought it seemed too much like the look of a lesbian.

When he found what she was doing as Ripley 8 to Call who had come to kill her, and she is caressing Call's cheek, Jeunet spoke out "There, you asked me to warn you, I warn you, we are in it"

b) Sigourney takes control
And strangely Sigourney's response was to him "Do not worry, I control everything."

Jeunet was thrilled that she was going this far but in his opinion, he thought that she did not know what she was doing there.

It was to him like a contradiction or perhaps as far as she was concerned, she was a humanoid creature showing control, and in this instant, a sensuous way.

The studios however really pushed Jeunet to go in the sexual direction even if it was more between Ripley and the alien than Call and Ripley.

c) Impressions of a Lesbian Act
In Alien Resurrection, Ripley 8 meets Call, reveals herself to not be quite as human like as one might have imagined and instead is human hybridized with alien genes,

With her face she caresses Analee Call's cheek in a manner similar to the almost gay kiss between Antonio Banderas as Armand and Brad Pitt as Louis in the 1994 film "Interview With A Vampire".

Ripley 8 as the 8th clone experiment in a series has an almost vampiress like quality, but Analee Call as we would later discover was an android.

The French magazine L'Express reported "The story of a loving relationship between a cloness and an android which suggests that it will end under covers " while L'évènement stated "Film Lesbien".

Lesbian themed fan fiction featuring the further adventures of Call and Ripley continued across the internet.

  1. Interviewer: Le film présente une relation Ripley-Call plutôt lesbienne. Comment les studios américains qui son si puritains on tils géré ça?
(Translation:)The film has a Ripley-Call lesbian relationship rather. How the American studios that are so Puritans they managed that?

Jean-Pierre Jeunet: Call... C’est marrant que tu parles de ça, parce que la première chose que m’a dit Sigourney c’est “je ne veux pas comme dans les film de Fincher, faire lesbienne“ à cause de son crâne rasé, et tout ça... (Translation:) Call… It is funny which you speak about that, because the first thing which Sigourney said to me is “I do not want as in film of Fincher, to do lesbian “ because of her shaved cranium, and all that…

(Translation:) But it's funny because the first scene of the encounter in the cell between Ripley and Call coming to kill her, when she begins to caress her cheek and all that ... I will see it and I said "There, you asked me to warn you, I warn you, we are in it ".... She told me "Do not worry, I control everything." Me, I was thrilled, huh, but in my opinion she did not know what she was doing there! This is a contradiction. The studios have really pushed me to go in the sexual direction even if it was more between Ripley and the alien than Call and Ripley.(Chasseurs de Reves n°5 )

  1. The emotional, and possibly sexual, intimacy between Ripley and Call when the latter is 'outed' as a robot is a supremely moving moment.

  2. It´s not a secret that Ripley is attracted to Call.
The way in that she helps her and looks her, even in her touch. Oh Gosh. Even the actress who plays of Ripley noticed about their sensuality ways.
