- Roger Christian: In one of the main holds we decided that there would be various vehicle stored there, suitable to use when the Nostromo was at the mining location. I went to Ron Cobb and ask him for a few ideas for vehicles we could construct from the large airplane scrap pieces we had brought in . One of these sketches is in The Book of Alien by Paul Scanlon and Michael Gross called the ‘Two Place Helijet’. The functional detail and ability of Ron’s to quickly fire off a sketch is remarkable. Even the type of engines the vehicle would have Ron knew in precise detail, depending on my description of what the vehicle might be required to do. Ron did several sketches like this for us, as we talked about their different functions. The helijet would be the main vehicle, so I put an assistant in charge of sourcing the scrap and making it with a small team of prop makers. They built a rough mock-up and they sourced a larger pieces of aeroplane junk to use. We knew they were simply be seen as shapes in a dark lower hold areas when they were grabbing supplies or hunting the alien, but the detail with add authenticity and confirm the reality required to make an audience believe they were on a real ship.
